The island director of Tourism of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Laura Castro, has participated today Thursday in a conference to reflect on Overtourism or Mass Tourism, which has taken place in Malta and has been organized by the European Consultative Council of Innovation and SMEs .
At the meeting, the island director contributed the experience of Tenerife as a consolidated tourist destination and reinforced with the distinctions obtained in terms of sustainability and care for the environment such as the Biosphere or the Smart Tourist Destination. He also presented some lines of the Tenerife tourism sustainability strategy.
During her speech, Laura Castro stated that in terms of sustainability Tenerife is “a leading destination”. “Obtaining the Biosphere certification, granted by the Responsible Tourism Institute, represents a future commitment in the direction set by the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” said the island director, who pointed out that it is “a recognition that, in addition, allows the traveler to know what a destination like Tenerife does, given that the visitor is increasingly concerned about sustainability “.
“Along with the Biosphere certification, the island is also recognized as a Smart Tourist Destination, being the first in all of Spain to obtain it,” recalled the director, who added that this “reinforces us in talking about a transition towards sustainability and digitization of the destination “. “We have 48% of the protected territory, the most visited National Park in Spain, two World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, 600 endemisms or the cleanest sky in Europe. We have to protect our territory,” he concluded.
