The Cabildo de Tenerife has joined the commemoration of World AIDS Day with a campaign to disseminate the points of rapid detection of HIV infection, as reported by the CEO of Citizen Participation and Diversity, Nauzet Gugliotta, who explained that This campaign will be broadcast on the screens of Titsa buses this December 1.
Nauzet Gugliotta explained that this initiative seeks to “reach the greatest number of people.” “Relying on public transport increases that visibility that we need and that is so important on a day like this,” he explained. The CEO also valued the importance of ending the social stigma suffered by people living with HIV infection or AIDS.
In this sense, he wanted to remember that the institutions must show their support and support with concrete actions, so this dissemination campaign seeks to “raise awareness about the necessary measures for their prevention and the importance of early detection, always hand in hand with the collectives and entities, and in a coordinated manner with the administrations “. During the night of this Wednesday the Insular Palace will light up in red to commemorate this day.
The rapid HIV test consists of obtaining a blood or oral fluid sample to find out whether or not a person is infected with this virus. The results are known in just a few minutes, so the person who performs it knows it at the same time. This test is completely free, confidential, anonymous and reliable. In addition, it allows to detect the presence of other infections or sexually transmitted diseases.
The network of points where rapid detection tests are carried out is distributed throughout the island’s geography. They are carried out in health centers but also in various third sector entities such as the Red Cross, Doctors of the World or the Diversas Association. The Adeje City Council also carries them out. The plenary session of the Cabildo unanimously approved in 2020 a motion, presented by the socialist group, in order to adhere to the Social Pact for Non-Discrimination and Equal Treatment associated with HIV. The agreement also set out the commitment to adapt the objectives of the pact to the island environment and implement the necessary measures to reduce the impact of social stigma on people living with HIV, work in favor of social acceptance and generate knowledge that guides action and policies against discrimination. In the same way, the text urged the Tenerife municipalities to join this social pact.
