One of the great jewels that the chicharrera capital has is, without a doubt, the walk of the Rambla de Santa Cruz, which along almost three kilometers allows pedestrians to cross the city surrounded by trees, sculptures, benches for the rest or playgrounds … However, it does not allow a 100% accessible route, since pedestrians must leave the central boulevard, cross to the sidewalk, and cross again to continue the route.
The PSOE took a motion yesterday to Plenary to ensure that this journey enjoys continuity, without pedestrians facing this type of obstacles. A proposal that also included the study of the burying of traffic at the main crossings of this capital’s artery as a long-term solution. Precisely this last point, as advanced by the Councilor for Public Services, Guillermo Díaz Guerra, already has a budget item in the 2022 accounts. We have agreed that there should be a specific item for the drafting of the burial of the large roads at their junction with the Rambla de Santa Cruz ”, he pointed out. “I have never understood that a city that is limited by the refinery, on the one hand, and by the Anaga massif, on the other, is determined to grow horizontally, discarding verticality,” he said.
The PSOE proposal analyzes the intersections of Avenida de Belgium, Rambla Pulido, 25 de Julio and Méndez Núñez, for which it suggests changes in traffic lights, incorporation of pedestrian crossings and traffic modifications, aimed at improving accessibility. Regarding the burial of these crosses, Díaz Guerra incorporated that of Benito Pérez Armas, “which is a bottleneck”, as well as that of the access to Avenida Marítima from Tres de Mayo. “We understand that this crossing should be buried and maintain direct access to Tres de Mayo, alleviating traffic,” he added. The mayor indicated that they also intend to go to Metropolitano to “bury the crossings of the tram with the main roads of Santa Cruz.” Díaz Guerra, who congratulated the PSOE for the motion, although earlier he recalled that the PP had already presented a similar one in 2019, said that “we share the need for an accessible Rambla in its entire length.”
As detailed by the mayor of Public Services, initially, the item for the drafting of projects next year in his area is 600,000 euros, although it is likely that the Treasury will lower that figure. In addition, he pointed out that “the first of the burials that we will address will be that of Belgium Avenue, its updating, because it has been done for a long time.”
Another of the motions of the PSOE that yesterday went ahead was the renovation of the oldest sidewalks in the city. As detailed by the first deputy mayor, the motion was approved, since, throughout this month, the new road maintenance contract will be awarded, which includes the repair of the sidewalks and which contemplates increasing investment from the 200,000 current euros for this purpose, up to 1.2 million.
