The opposition in the Cabildo de Tenerife blocks the tender for the Arico recycling plant

The final agreement has three points. First, it raises the suspension of the tender in the terms already indicated. Right now it is in the period of presentation of offers. The reason is that “it is committed to the energy recovery of waste when it can be materially recovered (recycled or composted)”. This was the object of the debate within the commission.

The other two points approved are, on the one hand, that «in the Waste Management policies of the Island energy recovery is not considered as an option for the treatment of wastes with possibilities of material recovery ». And, on the other hand, “the immediate submission of the documentation to be dealt with in the urgent call of the Waste Management Monitoring Commission.” The final result of the vote was 6 to 5 in favor of the motion.

The councilor of CC-PNC Blanca Pérez took the proposal to the Commission, whose regulation is that of a mini-plenary. As happened at the end of the ordinary last month, she was the most belligerent with the counselor Rodríguez Medina. Like then, they got involved in the discussion about what energy recovery means and whether it is incineration or not. Pérez thanked the contributions to the text of the Popular Party and Sí Podemos Canarias. The agreement contemplates «that recycling is prioritized over incineration, as established by the EU ‘.

Blanca Pérez values: «It is necessary to stop this project because what the PSOE wants to do is burn the trash». He is grateful for the “high-mindedness” of the Popular Party and Yes We Can Canarias “on a very delicate issue and in which we have to look out for the interests of Tenerife.” He insists: «The reality is that they want burn the trash by different processes instead of promote reuse and recycling». The nationalist counselor points out that “the agreement approved today (yesterday) also provides that the Island’s Waste Management Policies do not consider energy recovery as an option.”

For its part, the Popular Party has expressed its “rejection” of the intention to establish an energy recovery plant, “in short, the burning of waste”, in the Environmental Complex.

They recall that “the mayor of Arico has confirmed to us that the president of the Cabildo has not met with him to discuss this issue. Nor has it done so with the parties with representation, an attitude that breaks the political and social consensus in relation to environmental policies. From the PP, they conclude, “we invite Pedro Martín to abandon totalitarianism and rule from dialogue.”

The Insular Commission for the Monitoring of Waste Management has been urgently convened for next Tuesday.

Martín criticizes the contradictions of CC

The president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, has considered “regrettable the permanent desire of CC to try to leave the island government in a minority, without caring that they are really fundamental issues for the island.” He adds: “They propose that a recycling project be stopped which, among other things, will allow us to reduce the waste that we are now forced to bury, giving it a second life and bringing us closer to the criteria established by the European Union.” He understands that “CC adduces a reason that is, plain and simple, a lie”, and that “once again it shows that when they are in the opposition they radically change their opinion about what they said when they were in power.” Valora: “The statements of the then regional councilor for the Environment of CC (Blanca Pérez) who defended in Parliament the same thing that are opposed today in the Cabildo are published.” He highlights: «From the Cabildo we act in the most responsible manner and we consider it regrettable that, despite the reports of the technicians, specialists in environmental matters, who have made it clear that this procedure complies with the regulations of the Autonomous Community, the State and the The EU, in line with the most developed models for recycling and waste treatment, wants to boycott it by disqualifying the conclusions of our technicians ”. He concludes: “Faced with this, the Cabildo will act in the opposite direction, offering clarity and information and providing data.” |
