It so happens that on March 10th the accesses to this point of the Güimarero coast were partially closed. The same day that the voluntary eviction of the place began, which lasted almost two months. The cause was the existence of an imminent risk of high danger from atmospheric phenomena, as well as a high risk of detachment from the tunnel slope. Both circumstances pose a threat to the integrity of the homes and the people of Las Bajas. This is stated in the technical report commissioned by the municipal government and received on February 15 last.
The work of the slope has been paralyzed since last September due to excess costs
Las Bajas a small town formed by a score of houses, caves and cave-houses (something similar to Bajo la Cuesta, in Candelaria) of which only eight were permanently inhabited. These eight families, which number around 20 people (including minors), were rehoused by the Güimarero City Council, an administration that, according to what the current first deputy mayor and councilor at that date, Airam Puerta, said at the time, assumed the cost of accommodation during the duration of the contemplated works to ensure the condition of the tunnel slope. That period was scheduled to be four months, that is, until last September.
However, that performance has been paralyzed since the end of that month of September, whenor it remains around 25% of the execution of the work. The provisional order was given by the mayor, Gustavo Pérez, given the excess cost of the work, contracted for 342,865 euros and which has already issued certifications that are close to a million and a half.
Those affected are still rehoused, but the city council has not paid the last months of rent
Costas has sent the families the communication announcing the demolition of their homes within the framework of the file for the recovery of possession of the space in the maritime-terrestrial public domain. The affected neighbors announce the adoption of measures to avoid the demolition. In addition, they are being harmed by the non-payment of the rent of the houses in which they were relocated, a situation that generates discomfort and uncertainty.
