SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cumbre Vieja volcano, on the island of La Palma, has been registering in the last 24 hours a high emission of very fluid lavas from the emitter focus of the northwest flank of the main cone, which continue to feed the streams, especially the areas casting 3 and 9, and to a lesser extent 1.
Pevolca’s technical director, Miguel Ángel Morcuende, indicated at a press conference that casting 3 is currently the one that is generating “the greatest problems.” Today it has run south and has opened in a flat area, and right now it is about 290 meters from the coast.
As for the rest of the casting areas, they continue to be monitored and have practically not moved. However, Miguel Ángel Morcuende has warned that at any given moment the morphology of the cone can change again and cause the lava flow to push these flows again.
On the other hand, Miguel Ángel Morcuende pointed out that the lava that is coming out of the volcano is flowing through the flows that were opened yesterday and through previous flows, causing them to grow in height. In fact, he highlighted that casting zone 1 has a height of more than 30 meters in many sections.
The area affected so far by the lava reaches 963.73 hectares, which shows the damage that the volcano is causing, especially due to the amount of inhabited and cultivated area that the lava runs through. The maximum width between casts is kept at 3,000 meters.
In addition, the data obtained by the Copernicus satellite indicates that 2,708 buildings / constructions have been affected, of which 2,562 have been destroyed and 146 at risk. The cultivated area affected by the lava stands at 279.88 hectares, of which more than half are still banana trees (156.7), 58.76 from vineyards and 23.82 from avocado.
The number of people housed in hotel centers is currently 463. Of these, 393 are staying at the Fuencaliente hotel and 70 are in a Los Llanos de Aridane hotel center. All are being cared for by the Spanish Red Cross, in coordination with municipal social services. In addition, there are 43 dependent people cared for in insular health centers.
FALL OF SEISMICITY.
Regarding seismicity, he stressed that there has been a decrease in both the number of earthquakes and the magnitude, although a high number continues to be recorded, although not as in recent days. Most of the seismicity is located in intermediate zones, between 10 and 15 km. Also, the deformations remain stable and there has been no variation.
The director of Pevolca stressed that the emission rate of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the plume has been decreasing for almost five days, although the amount is still very high, so “it would not be something that was magnificent news. We are waiting for something else. “Morcuende said.
He also added that there has been a significant problem in terms of suspended particles, which has been abundantly noted in the Llanos de Aridane, where yesterday the daily threshold for PM10 particles was exceeded, as well as in Tijarafe and Puntagorda. For this reason, it is recommended to use FFP2 masks and try to restrict exits to the street in Los Llanos, El Paso, Tazacorte, Tijarafe and Puntagorda while the high concentration of PM10 particles in suspension lasts.
