Initiative for La Gomera celebrates that the Parliament of the Canary Islands has shelved the macroport of Fonsalía

The Insular Committee of Initiative for La Gomera (IxLG) has indicated that it is a “victory” for civil society and especially for the platform Salvar Fonsalía la recent vote of the Parliament of the Canary Islands against the macroport project in this area of southern Tenerife. In a statement, he affirms that this project “threatened” one of the most important cetacean sanctuaries in the world and also “was in conflict with the Teno-Rasca Special Conservation Area.”

According to the Initiative for La Gomera, the damage that this port could generate to marine biodiversity is “unacceptable and unacceptable” from an environmental point of view, but also from a social and economic point of view. “It is not only the irreversible damage that would be done to the marine environment and the populations of cetaceans that exist in that marine strip, but also because this project is a turn of the screw in a socio-economic model that has been shown to be ineffective and harmful for the Canary Islands” , expresses the party in writing.

In addition, he points out that this is the model with which the Gomera Socialist Group (ASG) “is designing the present and the future of the island”, with the impulse that Puertos Canarios give to projects “that collide head-on with the majority sentiment of the population such as the Vueltas marina, whose proposed location puts the future of Vueltas beach at risk, the only beach in Valle Gran Rey that ensures sand throughout the year, “he denounces.

For the party, the Fonsalía macroport would not only generate a serious environmental impact on a high-value marine ecosystem, but would not imply an improvement in the connectivity with the metropolitan area of Tenerife. “To redirect the current commercial maritime traffic to Fonsalía would mean further distancing the population of the non-capital islands from the metropolitan area of Tenerife, with an increase of more than twenty minutes by road. How does that benefit those of us who live in La Gomera? “, they point out from the progressive formation.

The party celebrates this victory of the popular struggle and especially of the Salvar Fonsalía platform, which has managed to sensitize and mobilize public opinion “when some political forces wanted to deal with this issue in a not very transparent way and without much debate.” However, Initiative for La Gomera regrets the ambiguity of the PSOE, the main party of the Canary Islands Government, which has abstained from voting. “It seems that Ángel Víctor Torres and his party lack a real commitment to the Canarian marine environment and its conservation. They still do not want to abandon the old out-of-date ideas of ASG and PP of pit and cement,” they assure from the Insular Committee.
