This action, declared of general interest of the State, will allow obtaining a treatment and purification system that complies with the requirements established in the European Directive on urban wastewater treatment, achieving a quality of the treated water that allows its reuse through the the Lomo del Balo and the future Las Charquetas rafts, increasing water resources for irrigation, while helping to minimize the exploitation of the aquifer. These works are part of the set of actions that Acuaes, in collaboration with the Tenerife Council and the Insular Council of Waters of Tenerife, will develop in Tenerife with an investment that exceeds 170 million euros, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund Feder 2014-2020.
The work started consists of the development of environmental prevention measures, as well as the preparation of a native plant nursery for the subsequent restoration, protection and demolition of the unusable elements of the old treatment plant and the preparation of the area for the work facilities. Subsequently, the irrigation pipes, waste water and desalinated water will be replaced, which will be affected by the movement of earth necessary to form the platforms on which the different buildings and elements of the treatment plant will be located.
The new facility is located in the municipality of Guía de Isora and incorporates the pretreatment of the waters that arrive by gravity from the Guía de Isora and Chío collectors that are later joined with those on the coast, which are pumped from the station. treatment and pumping of wastewater from Playa San Juan, to undergo joint biological treatment, being dimensioned for a population of 109,000 equivalent inhabitants and a maximum treatment flow in the horizon year (2036) of 10,325 cubic meters per day.
The works, which must be completed within 24 months, represent an investment of 11.1 million of euros. In relation to the Etbar of Playa de San Juan and the pumping and impulses on the coast, with a cost of 4.9 and 8.8 million euros respectively, work has begun on the withdrawal of the irrigation network, replacement of services and clearing of the affected farms. It is also planned to undertake the project of collectors of medianías (2.2 million), whose works will begin in a few months.
The president of the Cabildo, Pedro Martín, emphasizes that the beginning of these works “implies the start-up of the solution to a historical problem in Tenerife: sewage ». “We are going to be able to end irregular discharges and inadequate wastewater treatment, which will mean a step forward in caring for the environment and in solving an urban problem that became scandalous,” concluded Martín.
