The mayor of Porto, Marco González (PSOE), held this Thursday, October 21, 2021, a meeting with the deputy delegate of the Government of Spain Francisco Javier Plata to “join efforts in the work that has been carried out by the municipality to control alcohol consumption in the street, a practice that is remembered is not allowed.” The meeting was also attended by the head of the Local Police, as well as the accidental provincial commissioner of the National Police Corps and the commissioner of the National Police for Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos.
Although the Local government (PSOE-ACP) maintains that “there have been no incidents worthy of mention or mass concentrations, they want to add the National Police to the work that has been carried out since the Local police to maintain coexistence in the areas of the city where there are concentrations of people late at night. For this reason, it has been agreed that the National Police travel every weekend especially to the La Paz area, in Aceviño street and surroundings, to reinforce the local body in this performance, in addition to urging the Civil Guard to redouble the breathalyzer controls on the nearby roads ».
“We join forces in the work that has been carried out by the municipality to control alcohol consumption in the street, a practice that is remembered is not allowed”
From the Portuense City Council «We want to thank the collaboration and coordination between both bodies to mitigate this practice as much as possible and thus, little by little, eradicate it not only to improve coexistence in the city, but also to protect people’s health from these facts that lead to a large consumption of alcohol in a few hours. In addition, it is recalled that the area where these bottles are usually held is also “a tourist area with hotels where hundreds of people work and where nighttime tranquility is highly valued.”
In addition, “work is being done from different areas to offer young people different leisure alternatives to those late-night stays that often involve alcohol intake». Apart from police action, the City Council is committed to “teaching” so that “society becomes aware of the danger that excessive consumption of alcohol represents for health and, therefore, the collaboration of families is requested ».
