La Orotava names Isidoro Sánchez García villero of honor

Isidoro Sánchez García was born in La Orotava in January 1942, and lived in the municipality until 1967, the year in which he moved his residence to Puerto de la Cruz. He has three children and three grandchildren. He was a councilor for the La Orotava City Council between 1979-1983 and 1983-1987; councilor of the Cabildo de Tenerife between 1983 and 1987; regional deputy (1983-1987) and senator for the Canary Islands, between 1987 and 1989. He also served as Deputy Minister of Institutional Relations of the Government of the Canary Islands (1993-1994). Between 1994 and 1996 it was European deputy; Councilor of the Puerto de la Cruz City Council between 1995 and 1999 and, again, European deputy between 1999 and 2003.

Isidoro Sánchez participated in events such as the Twinning of La Orotava with Sancti Spiritus (Cuba) in 1986; He invited the choir and the Rómulo Betancourt folk group to travel to Venezuela and Brussels, and also the Orotavian Music Band to Luxembourg. In addition, it was one of the promoters of the Rómulo Betancourt House of Culture, located in the Villa de Arriba.

Sánchez has edited several books on La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro, various national parks, Cuba, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador. He has also written about Humboldt, Rómulo Betancourt and Dulce María Loynaz. He is co-author of La Orotava from the sea to El Teide; La Orotava energetic, La Orotava in 12 hours and Don Esteban Salazar y Cologan, Count of Valle de Salazar. Thanks to your donations to the Municipal Library of La Orotava, The Humboldt Corner. And, in addition, he was the promoter of the initiative to dedicate a street in honor of the Cuban poet Sweet Maria Loynaz.

He is also the co-author of several audiovisual works such as Municipal elections in La Orotava, in 1979, as well as various documentaries and films: The grace to return, directed by Luis Leonel, and Una week out of the world, with Aurelio Carnero and Juan Carlos Sánchez at the address; The Orchid Garden of Soroa (Cuba); Waters and lights for the Villa de La Orotava, and Sand in the eyes (between the Sahara and the Canary Islands).

It was Spanish Forestry Press Award in 1982 for a work on the garoé tree, from the island of El Hierro. Important of Tourism by the CIT of La Orotava and Silver Medal by the CIT of Puerto de la Cruz. He is an honorary member of the House of Culture Leonor Pérez, of Havana; Order of Francisco de Miranda de Venezuela, 1st and 2nd class; Honorary citizen of the state of Washington, in the United States. In 2019 it was recognized by the provincial government of Chimborazo (Ecuador) and in 2021 it received in the University of La Laguna (ULL) a tribute from the Colegio de Ingenieros de Montes de Canarias for their professional work, when the book was published Challenges of forest and environmental management in the Canary Islands in the 21st century.
