The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, presented this Wednesday, together with the director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), Conrado Domínguez, the ‘Physical Activity Prescription’ agreement, by which both administrations will promote a active lifestyle among people with risk factors linked to sedentary lifestyle.
The Minister of Sports, Concepción Rivero, and the insular director of Sports, Ángel Pérez, also participated in the event.
With this agreement, SCS Primary Care will guide, recommend and prescribe patients with cardiovascular diseases or risk factors linked to a sedentary lifestyle to join physical activity programs through a catalog of island activities and facilities, municipal or developed by private non-profit entities, within their area of influence.
The agreement is valid for two years, has an initial budget of 150,000 euros and may benefit 1,500 people.
Pedro Martín stressed that this agreement combines efforts to improve the health of the population and so that in the face of a certain ailment or health problem it is possible “not only to raise the possibility of some therapeutic administration through medication to treat it, but also that it exists a physical and sports prescription “, and that a type of physical activity in which the Cabildo of Tenerife would intervene in coordination with the Canary Islands Health Service could be associated with a specific problem.
The president of the Cabildo also emphasized that “the pandemic, together with the tendency of the population to be increasingly aware of the importance of activity for their physical and mental health,” has led the corporation to promote this agreement as important, which will help the population to improve their lifestyle through sport, all in collaboration with other administrations, such as municipalities.
Conrado Domínguez invited the rest of the island corporations to join this initiative “led” by the Cabildo de Tenerife, since only “together” will it be possible to “advance further and improve the health of the canaries.”
Domínguez also assured that “the positive impact it will have on the health of the people of Tenerife is evident” and thanked this institutional collaboration, at the same time that he valued “an innovative initiative that can help improve the life habits of the population and make them healthier” .
The Minister of Sports recalled that “the sports policies of the Cabildo should be aimed at improving the health of citizens and a clear example is the implementation of this project, which wants to promote sports practice and physical exercise among citizens”, to which he added that “if the expected results are obtained, the project will be an example for other administrations.”
Ángel Pérez explained that “it is a referral service for patients with different pathologies from the SCS to the physical activity programs offered by the Cabildo and municipal facilities, where they will be treated according to their pathologies by the professionals that the Cabildo will hire. for the project”.
These will be at least four, graduates in science of physical activity and sports, who will program a personalized work designed exclusively for each patient.
APPLICATION AT HEALTH CENTERS
Those who wish to participate in this project should go to their doctor or nurse at their health center and request it.
The health personnel will be in charge of prescribing, depending on the type of pathology that the person has, the recommendations of one type or another of activity, which will be guided, near the areas of influence of the primary care centers, by specialist technicians in the matter dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerife.
According to the 2019 Survey of sports habits of the adult population of Tenerife, approximately 61.7% of the surveyed population suffers from overweight or obesity, while the latest published figures for the prevalence of obesity and childhood overweight in the Canary Islands indicate 32.8 % incidence.
The study also reflects a percentage of sedentary lifestyle of 32.73%.
For the Sports area of the Cabildo de Tenerife, it is essential to provide effective measures so that the Canarian population complies with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, which stipulate at least one hour a day of physical activity or sports in children and adolescents , and at least 150 minutes a week in the adult population.
This is one of the most important prevention factors for diseases derived from a sedentary lifestyle, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, vertebral pains, scoliosis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, asthma, COPD, cancer, hypercholesterolemia, depression, anxiety, disorders mood and related pictures.
In fact, several studies show that the consumption of prescription drugs is 18% higher in the most inactive population.
