The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, has requested that in islands that are at level 1, decreed by the Government of the Canary Islands, restrictions on capacity and hours in the commerce and hospitality sectors be eliminated. Bermúdez considers that the epidemiological data and the trend of infections “are very positive in recent weeks, and it is time to start a debate in the Canary Islands about the possibility of eliminating these restrictions.” José Manuel Bermúdez added that “Tenerife should be at level 1 since last Thursday, because this is what the epidemiological reports indicate.”
The municipal councilor stated that “it does not make sense that, while the capacity of soccer fields in all Spain can be covered to 100%, that of sports pavilions to 80% or the airplanes can go with all their seats occupied, the cultural activity, restaurant or commercial continues to be conditioned by capacity and schedule restrictions ”.
“These restrictions,” said the mayor, “continue to be a drag on the economic reactivation or the recovery of employment, which is now a priority for the battered economy of thousands of families in Santa Cruz, the rest of the island and the Canary Islands.”
Bermúdez added that said elimination of restrictions, “which are already being carried out by other autonomous communities, should be adopted when each island is at medium or low risk, according to the epidemiological reports published by the Government of the Canary Islands.” The mayor of Santa Cruz had already pointed out these days, in an interview with DIARIO DE AVISOS, that possibility, especially when the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands annulled the last of the decrees to extend hours in nightlife. “I think that more dialogue should have been done with city councils, institutions and even with entities,” he replied when asked about this question.
“Perhaps at this time,” he continued, “this type of decision should be replaced by a debate on whether the restrictions should be terminated once we enter level 1, as we are doing in other autonomous communities, which have already announced the elimination of restrictions. or the establishment of measures that soften the capacity in cultural or sporting events so that we can little by little return to normality ”.
The mayor pointed out that “it does not make much sense to maintain this type of decrees if we continue the infections as they go.”
