The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, accompanied by the councilor for Works, Dámaso Arteaga, and the councilor of the Anaga district, Inmaculada Fuentes, held a meeting yesterday afternoon with residents, merchants and fishermen of San Andrés with the intention to collect their suggestions and demands around three projects that aim to improve the quality of life of residents, promote pedestrian and commercial use of Dique Street, adapt the rehabilitation of the Castle environment to neighborhood demands, in addition to presenting a alternative for mooring boats outside Las Teresitas.

Bermúdez opened the meeting stating that “this afternoon we presented to residents, merchants and fishermen of San Andrés three proposals to improve the environment, in which the first is the rehabilitation and enhancement of the castle of San Andrés and its protective environment; the remodeling of Dique Street, with the intention of providing it with possibilities for it to be a pedestrian recreational place that promotes commerce in the area “and added that” by providing this entrance street to the town with adequate lighting that is attractive to visitors and tourists ”.

For his part, Dámaso Arteaga indicated that “in the case of Dique Street, its remodeling is contemplated in order to adapt its current use, mainly for traffic and parking, to that of a free public space cataloged as Plaza”, ensuring that “Where the priority will be pedestrian and leisure use, leaving a lane for restricted traffic of neighboring vehicles and loading and unloading”, and which provides “to provide the parking line of Avenida Marítima with a sidewalk, since currently there is no there is a pedestrian route between these car parks and the neighboring roads ”.

“This action – affirms the councilor – contemplates the adaptation of the road and sidewalk and pedestrian fords, adjusting to the accessibility regulations for people with reduced mobility; conditioning of the bus stop on avda. Maritime; landscape adaptation of the environment ”and furthermore, Arteaga insists“ the design of a new drainage system, conditioning of efficient public lighting and the use of urban furniture and some gardening ”and concludes by anticipating that this comprehensive remodeling of Dique Street will mean an investment of over one million euros ”.

With regard to the Castillo de San Andrés, the Councilor for Works reported that “it is currently in the drafting process by the team that won the ideas competition called at the time, and that it takes into account the neighborhood requests” informing that “in fact the intention is to maintain the ruin as a symbol of the people, a historical monument that has been in its current state for 126 years, which no one knows of a single piece, and which is thus represented in the different institutions of the area, such as they are neighborhood associations, the public school, or the soccer team, among others ”.

“The idea – Arteaga advances – is to consolidate the existing structures with their pathologies, discarding the reconstruction of the tower to its original state, so the San Andrés tower must be preserved, carrying out the necessary restorations and consolidations to preserve it in its current state. “And to achieve” that the area becomes an open space for the neighbors and in the tower have a monument that is the door of Anaga and inside, a visitor center that values the culture and heritage of the city. Biosphere Reserve, with a total investment of more than one million euros ”.

To conclude, Dámaso Arteaga announced a progress “of the proposal for the management of the San Andrés anchorage area, with the ultimate objective that this action allows the transfer of pleasure boats and professionals that are at the entrance to the beach. de Las Teresitas ”with the intention of placing them in“ the sheltered area resulting from the breakwater that defends the San Andrés front, which we understand is a suitable enclave, for which we have transferred this request to the Port Authority and it is being processed The file”
