The Councilor for Citizen Security of the City Council of La Laguna, Alejandro Marrero, and the Deputy Delegate of the Government in the Canary Islands, Javier Plata, have met this Thursday with the aim of establishing a joint device to control nightlife in the municipality, mainly the purposes of week.
In a statement, Alejandro Marrero explains that given the situation that is occurring in various parts of the municipality, “and in a very special way in the Quadrilateral area”, it is necessary to strengthen collaboration to avoid the organization of bottles “and guarantee the compliance with the established regulations that allow combining the right to leisure with the neighborhood rest ”.
Among the agreed measures, which will begin to be applied this weekend, are the establishment of a joint device, the reinforcement of the police presence from the afternoon hours (including the participation of the Operational Response Group of the National Police Corps), and the definition of the action protocol in the face of the different situations that may arise.
The goal, says Alejandro Marrero, is to prevent bottles from being started, as well as to make it easier for nights to run normally in the area, and for bars to comply with opening hours and anticovid measures, “such as capacity limitation and use of masks ”.
At the same time, the Municipal Services area will advance the closure of the public parks near the nightlife areas, and the street cleaning service will begin its intervention in the area earlier, in the early morning hours.
Both the councilor and the subdelegate of the Government consider that the increase in people on the streets of the city at night has been caused by the beginning of the academic year and the end of the mobility restrictions established during the pandemic.
A phenomenon, they maintain, that is taking place in numerous cities in Spain, “not only university ones”, and that requires greater coordination by the public order forces, they conclude.
