The Plenary of the Canary Islands Parliament has unanimously approved this Wednesday a Proposal No of Law (NLP) of the Mixed Group in which it is requested that room solutions be guaranteed for those affected by the volcanic eruption on La Palma and the implementation of a special plan to support the island.
The text also includes, among other issues, the execution of an urgent plan to replace homes, promote the request to the EU Solidarity Funds, that the aid be managed quickly and that there be special tax and labor measures for those affected.
The spokesperson of the Mixed Group, Vidina Espino, has said that the “catastrophe” of La Palma must mark “a before and after” in the care of the victims and that it is guaranteed that all the aid and their rights are fulfilled.
Jacob Qadri, from the Popular Group, has commented that on La Palma “everything is black, everything is dark”, but has guaranteed that the institutions will work to “leave behind” the effects of the eruption as soon as possible.
He has said that there has not yet been time to “assimilate” the real damages of the eruption and the evolution of the volcano “is changing”, warning that many measures that are approved now will be out of date in the coming weeks.
REDUCE THE BUREAUCRACY
Apart from financial resources, he also commented that it is necessary to reduce bureaucracy and streamline administrative procedures, and that all institutions be “very generous” with the island because reconstruction is going to take longer.
For the Nationalist Group, Lady Barreto hopes that “certainty” will begin to be given to those affected with the purchase of homes and the search for land and re-qualifications, at the same time that she has asked the regional government to release items for the municipalities of Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte, the most affected by the eruption.
He also indicated that “it is very urgent” to fix the irrigation network of the banana farms that are still standing in order to maintain some crops. “If we lose the crops without being able to water them, the future becomes much more complicated,” he said.
Jesús Ramos (ASG) has valued that the declaration of La Palma as a ‘catastrophic zone’ will help accelerate the support measures and now “it is time to work together” on urban changes and the enhancement of the productive fabric when the eruption passes.
Manuel Marrero, spokesman for Sí Podemos, has commented that La Palma is experiencing “a tragedy” and with a primary sector, which contributes 61% of the island’s GDP, very threatened, hence he has valued the “unity” of all groups to find measurements.
COMMITMENT AND UNITY
He has demanded more consumption of bananas and avocados from the island to show support for the island – he has placed them on the lectern -, that the irrigation system is guaranteed and supported the reconstruction plan that the central government and the Specific ERTE for the ‘pretty island’.
The NC spokesman, Luis Campos, has highlighted the “enormous unity” of Canarian society in the face of the La Palma eruption and that “a good start” has been made in the management of the damage, as shown by the majority of the measures of NLP is already underway.
In his opinion, the most important thing is that the institutions guarantee that “they are not going to fail the Palma brothers” and for this reason, he has valued the immediate response of President Pedro Sánchez on his trip to the island.
Jorge González, from the Socialist Group, has pointed out that the volcanic eruption is “the worst” tragedy that La Palma has experienced and predicted that the economic and social recovery “will be long and hard”, highlighting the “unity and commitment” of all the institutions to give answers to those affected.
