Justice investigates a high official of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council for irregular contracts

The Court of Instruction number 1 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been investigating since last August a high official of the City Council of that city, currently a position of trust of the Canary Coalition, for an allegedly irregular contract entered into with a supplier of equipment of the House de la Juventud inaugurated in 2018 in the building known as Casa Siliuto. Pilar Rodríguez Machín, the person under investigation, appeared before Judge María de los Ángeles Zabala on August 18, but took advantage of her right not to testify. This contract is not the only one that is under suspicion, but it is currently the one that is being investigated while waiting for the City Council to send the requested documentation to the court.

The magistrate recently opened proceedings as a result of a ruling by the Contentious-Administrative Court number 2 of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which last March resolved a dispute between a furniture marketing company and the Capital City Council for the non-payment of a invoice for an amount of more than 9,600 euros. The magistrate, Roi López Encina, appreciated the possible commission of a criminal offense, for which he deduced testimony from the courts of the capital so that an investigation could be opened.

According to that ruling, the Consistory and the company entered into a minor supply contract “without being subject to the legally established rules, since the amounts of the contract were divided and they agreed to deliver the furniture in exchange for a certain price.” According to this ruling, the contract was divided into seven invoices and was “managed” by the Councilor for Education at that time, Varónica Messegué, currently a Councilor for the Cabildo de Tenerife for the Canary Coalition (in opposition) and an advisor to the Mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez.

Messegué is not yet listed as a defendant, but the investigation has only just begun because the investigating magistrate is waiting for the City Council to send her the entire file on this specific contract.

Pilar Rodríguez Machín, the only person charged so far, is a well-known Canarian Coalition militant who has held various public positions with that formation. She has been, among other things, territorial director of Culture and Sports, has appeared as a candidate on various electoral lists, both for the Congress of Deputies and for the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council; She has acted as a representative of CC before the Electoral Board, even defending her party in a file in which she appeared as affected by having been the one who organized an electoral act in the middle of the 2019 campaign as head of the Economic Promotion and Youth service.
