In a statement, the political group recalls that “at the end of last July in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, access to Playa Chica had to be prohibited due to the appearance of a polluting spot.” In the middle of last August, the city council of Granadilla de Abona “proceeded to close the beach of El Médano after identifying the presence of the fecal bacteria E.coli, because it greatly exceeded the permitted contamination limits ”. Last Friday, September 3, the municipality of Granada proceeded to a new closure of the beaches of El Médano Leocadio Machado and Los Abrigos due to the new appearance of this fecal bacteria.

From Sí Podemos Canarias they recall that also last week there was the closure of numerous bathing points in the municipalities of Santa Cruz, Candelaria, Güímar or Arafo due to the appearance of hydrocarbon discharges (piche) pollutants in the waters, whose origin is due to now unknown and that put in “serious question” the health of the island’s beaches, “as evidenced by the appearance of dead fish in waters of Candelaria affected by these discharges.” “What Tenerife lacked is to go back decades in time and return to a terrible scenario in which we found ourselves piche on our beaches frequently, we have to act immediately and tackle this problem in time to prevent it from going to more ”, he adds.

Faced with this situation, the island group claims to Pedro Martín, president of the Tenerife Council, that “in defense of the interests of this Island, the competent administrations are urged to carry out the pertinent procedures to find out what are the causes that are causing this contamination, so that, later, the corresponding responsibilities are purged and the corresponding sanctions are imposed on the parties responsible for causing this environmental attack ”.

Sí Podemos Canarias highlights that from its political group they have been warning for some time of the serious problem posed by the situation of the numerous black spots of uncontrolled discharges in Tenerife. “We are dragging behind our backs the greatest economic sanction that the European Union has imposed on our country for the incorrect treatment of wastewater, including points on our Island.”

For this reason, Sí Podemos Canarias defends that “from public institutions we have the responsibility to immediately reverse this situation, so it is urgent to solve what happened with these new polluting discharges so as not to continue adding to the list of shame that we have been for years. protagonists for the terrible situation of the treatment of our waters ”.
