On December 4, 2017, the Ministry of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands awarded the construction of the Guaza Secondary Education Institute (IES) to the company Proyecon Galicia for 5,885,885 euros. With a capacity for 680 students, it is built on a plot of 13,120 square meters and will have 22 units. The center will have a covered sports hall, an auditorium with access to the outside for use as a cultural center for the area, as well as parking spaces for staff in the semi-basement.
The current IES Guaza emerged as an emergency solution 19 years ago, to attend to the demographic explosion that Arona registered at the beginning of this century. After three months of work, it was inaugurated on September 12, 2002, being the first modular educational center built in the Canary Islands. Today it is the only one in Tenerife. At this time, the barracks that make up the center experience great deterioration, presenting serious deficiencies as a result of their prolonged use. The students will start the new year in them with the hope of finishing the school year in the new center.
