The Popular Group in the Cabildo de Tenerife considers that the differences and internal fights of the PSOE in the Canary Islands cause the uncertainty in which the Puerto de Fonsalía project finds itself. For this reason, he asks the president of the Island Corporation, the socialist Pedro Martín, to convene an emergency meeting with the parties represented in plenary to “analyze and address” the problem and “the future of maritime communications between Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro ». The meeting, according to the criteria of the counselor Manuel Fernández, should be attended by technicians who provide “a rigorous analysis of the situation” and pronounce on “the different possible scenarios.”
Manuel Fernández “ugly” the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, who contradicts his party colleague and Climate Change Minister, José Antonio Valbuena, by ensuring that the expiration of the environmental impact study of the Port of Fonsalía project is still is certified. Besides being “an incongruity”, it is also “an inexcusable lack of seriousness in public office.” Fernández asks Torres to demand responsibilities “if any director is responsible for the expiration of this document.”
The PP is concerned because “it is a shame that, in the midst of a terrible economic context that is severely punishing Canary families, we have to attend fights between public officials (Valbuena against all) of the same party, the one that governs both in the Cabildo and in the Canary Islands. They should be focused on solving citizens’ problems rather than wasting their energy on internal battles.
After stating that “this begins to look like an open war between different factions of the PSOE in the Canary Islands” while the citizens of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro “suffer the poor conditions in which the Puerto de Los Cristianos is found, with queues, delays and absolute collapse, as we have seen this summer “, Manuel Fernández urges Pedro Martín and Ángel Víctor Torres” to make self-criticism and make decisions, because Tenerife and the Canary Islands cannot wait for them to solve their personal problems ».
“Byzantine discussions”
Óscar Izquierdo, president of the provincial construction employers’ association, Fepeco, warns against those who prolong “an eternal, Machiavellian, demagogic, insubstantial debate and without any intention of finding an agreement, with the sole purpose of passing time in Byzantine discussions and thus extend, sine die, the necessary procedures to conclude the Port of Fonsalía ».
Izquierdo alludes to an “ideologized minority” that, in addition to being “very well embedded in the administrative services that have to make the reports (…), do not have any democratic legitimacy and do not represent the vast majority of Tenerife society and of the three green islands, which do want the aforementioned port.
The president of Fepeco demands unity and dialogue on the basis that no one is in possession of the absolute truth. In his opinion, the Government of the Canary Islands “has to impose its legitimate and democratic authority, over and above populist or electoralist pressures, putting in place, with all environmental guarantees, those public works and infrastructures that serve as a basis for economic growth and the social development of Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma. What cannot be allowed is that, for fear of facing a denialist, unruly and paralyzing minority, the execution of what is a priority is delayed, “he concludes.
