He always played it with his father on the corner of Valentín Sanz and Calle Castillo. There, yesterday, the aria sounded one last time Nessun dorma from the opera Turandot, and it did so in the voice of Sislena Caparrosa. A performance with which the young interpreter wanted to join the tribute that the Santa Cruz City Council paid to her father, Nilo Caparrosa, with a mural at the same point where this Dominican musician played his trumpet so many times. Sislena’s tears while she interpreted the music that Puccini composed, revealed the emotionality of a moment that ended with a closed ovation from the audience that swirled around Sislena, who also had her birthday yesterday.
The Department of Culture has been the promoter of the giant mural that was presented yesterday in tribute to the musicians who perform in the street and, especially, the Dominican trumpeter Nilo Caparrosa who died last March, and which for about a decade entertained the streets of the capital. The artistic work, carried out by Sabotaje al Montaña, reproduces two passport-size photographs on a wall more than 16 meters high and almost six meters wide, in total about 95 square meters.
The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, was accompanied by the musician’s children, Sislena and Israel Caparrosa; the Consul General of the Dominican Republic, Katia Juliana Castillo Marte, and the artist responsible for the mural, Matías Mala. The mayor, in his speech, was very happy about the mural tribute to the Dominican musician, of which he stressed that “one is not always an artist and loved one, and Nilo made himself loved a lot thanks to the fact that he gave us his music, in addition to his affection and friendship”.
“On this street he gave us many times with his daughter Sislena the best he could give us, which was his art. And we wanted to return that affection with this mural that Matías Mata has made ”, added the mayor. For their part, the children of the deceased trumpeter were very excited and wanted to thank the City Council “and all the people who stopped to listen to our father’s music. Without a doubt, it is the best gift they have been able to give us and we hope you enjoy it ”.
