SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Aug 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, has valued that the Council of Ministers has agreed on Tuesday the declaration of the Canary Islands as a “severely affected area” due to a Civil Protection emergency, known as a ‘catastrophic zone’, after the fire that occurred last week on La Palma and which mainly affected the municipalities of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane.

The regional person in charge of the area highlighted “the commitment of the Government of Spain to La Palma and with the neighbors who have lost their homes and the main economic support of many families who are dedicated to agriculture and local livestock”.

In this sense, he pointed out that “with this declaration, the State will enable a fundamental help line to mitigate material and personal damage, mainly damage to infrastructures, homes, fixtures and agricultural establishments, among other actions.”

“We are going to work hand in hand with all the administrations so that the aid is processed as quickly as possible and to return as soon as possible to normality on an island that has suffered the devastating consequences of the fire,” he said.

The approximate area of the fire is around 300 hectares, with a perimeter of 10 kilometers, affecting homes, vehicles and agricultural estates.
