Tenerife, the only island with epidemiological indicators at extreme risk

Tenerife is the only island with epidemiological indicators at extreme risk, as reflected in the latest report on the progress of COVID-19 in the Archipelago published daily by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands. Just six days ago, there were three islands that painted some of the studied epigraphs brown (very high risk) (incidences, positivity, traceability, occupation of hospital beds and ICU beds). Then Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura joined Tenerife.

These three islands have been improving their data in recent days and, at least in the case of the round island, a change in their health alert level is predicted which would drop to 3 after several weeks at 4, the most restrictive.

Thus, the Tenerife indicators for this Monday reflect a total change in its trend and the confirmation of the control of its contagion curve: it only points to two epigraphs in extreme risk, of the five that it painted brown just a week ago. . This is the accumulated incidence (AI) at 14 days in people over 65 years of age, which by this Tuesday reached 152.47 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the occupancy of ICU beds, which reached 29.1%.

In the case of 14-day AI in Tenerife over 65, everything seems to indicate that in the next few days it will be possible to go to high risk, which paints red those incidents ranging from 100 to 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. A positive fact since it is the elderly who suffer the worst consequences of the disease.

The same is not the case with ICU occupancy, the indicator that worries the most and the most difficult to control, since patients in serious condition can spend weeks in the intensive care unit. At the moment, 61 residents of Tenerife are in ICUs in serious condition, fighting against COVID-19, which represents 63.5% of critical cases in the entire Canary Islands. Until 25% is reached, this indicator will remain at extreme risk.

It should be remembered that this report is taken as a reference when deciding on the restrictions. Likewise, to remain at level 4, the islands must present two health indicators at extreme or very high risk (brown): incidences, positivity or traceability; and an indicator of attendance at the same level: percentage of hospital occupancy or ICU beds. While to pass to level 3, the island would need to add two health indicators and one health care indicator at high risk (red).

The UCI occupation in Tenerife, therefore, may lead the Governing Council to keep the island at level 4 for one more week, waiting for the percentage to continue to evolve favorably into September.

The rest of the indicators are presented this Monday at high risk (incidence at 14 and 7 days and in one week in people over 65 years of age) and at medium risk (hospital occupancy, traceability and positivity).

Tenerife COVID data for this Monday

Tenerife added 111 new cases of COVID-19 this Monday, bringing the total number to 43,506 infections since the pandemic began. On the island, a total of 516 people have died from the disease, none in the previous day.

Regarding the accumulated incidence, this Monday there was a slight slowdown in the decline of the contagion curve. Thus, the seven-day AI went from 91.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for this Sunday, to 92.6 this Monday. Even so, those 325 infections per 100,000 inhabitants registered at the end of July are already a long way off. At 14 days, the AI falls from 244.8 to 237.6.

Currently, 8,662 cases of COVID-19 remain active on the island: 61 in the ICU, 277 in the hospital ward and 8,324 in quarantine at home.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, of the 253 people admitted to conventional beds in the last two weeks throughout the Archipelago, 64% were unimmunized; A figure that in the case of those admitted to the ICU amounts to 81%.
