The municipality of San Miguel de Abona has collected more than 20 kilos of useless writing material such as pens, markers and permanent pens, correctors and highlighters, among others. The purpose of this initiative is to promote and recycle this type of utensils. For this, the Consistory had the collaboration of the teaching teams and the students of the different schools, as well as the Citizen Attention Services (SAC) and the workers of the municipal offices. All the material will be delivered in the next few days to the Action Project for the Recycling of Ballpoint Pens (Arbol), which includes other useless writing instruments.
The material will go through the facilities of the Martínez Cano Canarias paper and cardboard recycling company to later be transferred to the Peninsula and end in France, where the recycling process will be completed.
Julián Martín, councilor for Public Services of San Miguel de Abona, clarifies in this regard that “currently there is no system in the archipelago for the recovery and management of this waste, therefore, collaborating with the project, the waste from of writing instruments, mostly made of plastics, end up in the landfill, and can be recycled.
The San Miguel Council is grateful for the collaboration of the different public departments involved as well as the local educational centers. It is precisely the schools that contributed the most material to the campaign, highlighting the cases of Luther King San Miguel and El Roque.
The purpose of the City Council of San Miguel de Abona is to continue showing its support for the Arbol project. Along these lines, the municipal government makes an appeal and encourages citizens “to separate this waste and deposit it in municipal facilities, as well as in the dependencies of the Citizen Attention Services, the library and toy libraries, among others.
