The mayor of Fiestas ‘dared’ to pose the challenge to the head of galas in Santa Cruz and received the ‘yes, I want’, discovering the story of a family who came to work and fell in love in and with the Port.
Puerto de la Cruz celebrates the third edition of the Tenerife Summer Carnival next September that this time he can boast of having someone who returns home in charge of the artistic direction. The Portuense Party councilor, Alberto Castilla, admits that in his desire to reach higher heights, he dared to ask the artistic director of the Chicharrero Carnival since 2014 –with some parenthesis–, Enrique Camacho, to take charge of the summer carnival festivities that will take place in Lago Martíanez.
What for Castilla was audacity, turned into a surprise. Not only because of Camacho’s willingness to take on the challenge, but above all because the decision is loaded with ties of affection between the tourist city and the family of the director of the Summer Carnival. After that coffee that serves as an excuse to unleash the imagination in order to share projects in common, the one who was Head of Artistic Production of the Tenerife Auditorium who grew up in the show at the hands of Jaime Azpilicueta turned out to be the son of Enrique Camacho Chirrín, what it supposes the reunion of the family with the city three generations later.
Alberto Castilla now boasts not only the signing of Camacho, which a priori seemed like an impossible mission, but also that someone who knows the Port, where his family was forged, is at the head of the Summer Carnival.
It was fate that brought Enrique Camacho’s grandfather from his native Madrid to the tourist city, when he was still in the making, as postmaster, and there he settled with his wife and seven children. Among them, Enrique Chirrín, who was three years old when he arrived, and who with the passage of time also became a post office worker, where love with Delia, his co-worker, emerged. They both constituted a home in which Enrique was born. It could be the argument of some of the overtures of the shows that Camacho himself puts on stage and on top of that it has the addition that it is based on a real event. It is the intra-family history of those who already work in the direction of the third Tenerife Summer Carnival in their reunion with the Port.
The preparations for this call are carried out with the caution that the mayor, Marco González, has reiterated to his councilor for Parties, knowing the sanitary regulations that are in force by the declaration of level 4 to avoid possible contagions of the Covid.
For this reason, Alberto Castilla reiterates that, as happened last year, there will not be mass events, which is not incompatible with the promotion and protection of tourism at the national and international level of the third Summer Carnival.
Party mood
After the parenthesis of last year, Puerto de la Cruz recovers the celebration of what will be its second Carnival King, who was elected for the first time in 2019.
Alberto Castilla admits his surprise at the good reception of the gala call; In the first edition, nine candidates were registered with their respective designers, so in the drafting of the bases for the summer Carnival this year a ceiling of sixteen candidates was put. At the close of the registration period, the organization has registered eighteen requests for participation, so the admission will be made according to the registration date, and two candidates will be out.
The good vibes surrounding this new edition of the summer carnivals that are resumed in Puerto de la Cruz after the parenthesis of 2020 are confirmed with the bet made by Televisión Canaria, which has just committed the broadcast of the gala for the election of the Carnival king to be held in the Lake Martíanez, the epicenter of cultural activity, and which will precisely mean Enrique Camacho’s reunion with the city where his family took root three generations ago. 15 days left.
The King’s Gala, September 10
The councilor for Fiestas del Puerto highlights the four objectives of the Summer Carnival: the promotion and projection of tourism, as a cultural value and hallmark of the city, generator of trends and well-being for all through community development. Under these premises, a program has been developed that covers from Monday, September 6 to Sunday, September 12. The inauguration will come from the hand of an exhibition that will exalt the different expressions of the festival that exist in Tenerife and that will give way on Tuesday to the reception of the two German embassies that meet for the first time in the Port. A forum on the evolution of the festival will focus the activity on Wednesday and Thursday, which will alternate with group performances in hotels. On Friday will be the king’s gala and on Saturday, I will perform at Lago Martíanez.
