The mayor, José Heriberto González, assured that in 2022 Garachico will celebrate the festivities in honor of Santa Ana and San Roque. “Naturally yes,” he replied when questioned. Today, the day of the copatron, the municipality will not enjoy its traditional pilgrimage for the second consecutive year. There will be those who do celebrate it inside their homes, as in 2020. The program includes for today the celebration of five Masses (8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 17:00 and 19:00) in the church matrix of Santa Ana.
The Glorieta de San Francisco, with limited capacity, was the scene of the Festival of Traditions, in which, since 1960, the romera mayor is chosen. In this edition, homage was paid to all of them. More than thirty attended, wearing traditional clothing. The setting was also the scene of a tribute to the late José Ubaldo Hernández, a specialist in traditional Canarian clothing and a collaborator of Garachico’s main festivals since 2010. José Manuel Afonso received the municipal metope as a town crier and the Pieles company offered his show Skin to Skin. The projection of images and the singing of Viva San Roquito closed the act.
In the same venue, the Ben Gara folk group staged traditional agricultural prints, mixed with pieces of Canarian folklore. The moment was used to offer the posthumous tribute to who was a founding member of Ben Gara and butler of San Roque, Marcos Expósito.
