A baby suffered a sudden death mid-morning yesterday on a public road in the tourist center of Costa Adeje, in Tenerife. The emergency mobilized members of the National Police of the South Police Station of Tenerife and members of the Canary Islands Health Service (SUC), who could not do anything to recover him from the cardiorespiratory arrest in which he was at the time he was reported the alert to the 1-1-2 room. The event occurred around noon, and generated a stir in an area that traditionally has a huge influx of pedestrians.
Members of the CNP judicial police traveled to the area to open the appropriate procedures once the health resources exhausted all the means to recover the baby. Subsequently, the corresponding judicial authority was informed so that the procedures for the transfer of the lifeless body to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Santa Cruz de Tenerife began, where forensic tests were carried out to determine the causes of death.
In addition to providing support to the adults who were with the baby at the time of the event – dramatic moments were experienced on the street – the police officers took statements from different witnesses who were included in some proceedings in the that there were no signs of external violence pending results that ended up certifying that the death occurred due to natural causes, although they are unusual.
At first, it was speculated that the baby had suffered a heat stroke or dehydration due to the high temperatures that were registered at the time the emergency was notified.
Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of death in children between one month and one year. Most of these incidents occur in the crib while they sleep and it is not necessary that previous pathologies be diagnosed. In the case of Costa Adeje, according to the data to which this newspaper has had access, the tragedy occurred during a transfer of the baby and no one realized what had happened until they tried to wake him up. At that moment it was when the collaboration of some passers-by was requested and the event was reported to 1-1-2-.
